Olivia Rodrigo's New Album Title Is Breaking A Major Tradition
This is a total curveball.
After weeks and weeks of teasing her next project, Olivia Rodrigo finally unveiled her third studio album on April 2 — and it has a title that no fan saw coming. Although superfans of Rodrigo did predict a bit of a shift in terms of a more loved-up theme and a pinker aesthetic, the record’s lengthy, all-lowercase name is a distinct departure from the singer’s first two releases. So, buckle up for an unpredictable new side of Rodrigo.
Rodrigo began teasing the upcoming album by slowly repainting a purple wall in Los Angeles pink and adding some telling hints to the structure, like the word, “Love.” Rodrigo’s first two albums, SOUR and GUTS, both had a purple aesthetic, so fans quickly deduced the new project would shift to pink. For a while, LOVE was expected to be the album title, following Rodrigo’s pattern of four-word album names. But now it seems she was intentionally throwing all the sleuths off. In an April 2 Instagram annoucement, she revealed the album is actually called you seem pretty sad for a girl so in love.
“I am so proud of this record and I can’t wait for you to hear it,” Rodrigo captioned the post, showing off the cover art of herself in a pink dress laughing on a swing.
The title isn’t the only thing that seems to set this release apart. Although the name clearly hints at sad feelings, it is also Rodrigo’s first album made while in a happy, public relationship. 2021’s SOUR was mainly about heartbreak, as exemplified by the breakup ballad “drivers license,” and GUTS dug into a much angrier and more vengeful split with its lead single, “vampire.”
Rodrigo has been dating Louis Partridge since the end of 2023, and although there have been recent rumors they may have split, Rodrigo seems to be dropping clues the new record is all about their love story.
