Lola Tung Says Fans Have “No Clue” About The Ending Of TSITP S3

Spoiler warning: This post contains spoilers about the end of The Summer I Turned Pretty book series. The Summer I Turned Pretty is coming back for one last season on July 16. Although the third book, We’ll Always Have Summer, has been out since 2011, fans of the series still aren’t sure how the show will end — if it will stay true to the books or switch up the narrative entirely.

TSITP’s cast has only been adding to the confusion. During a May 20 interview with Entertainment Weekly, the stars of the show — Lola Tung, Gavin Casalegno, and Christopher Briney — weighed in on the fan theories surrounding the ending. “But you don't really know," Casalegno said, when asked about fan’s guesses about the finale. “You have no clue,” Tung said. Briney added, “You have not read the scripts!”

Jenny Han, who wrote the books, also teased “surprises” to come. “There are surprises. And there are things that aren't exactly like the books,” she told EW. “There are definitely changes.” Han added that it will still be a “satisfying” ending for audiences.

This is not the first time they’ve hinted at some Season 3 changes. During a March 31 interview with Entertainment Weekly, Han teased, “There are the things that they know and then there are things they think they know, and then there's going to be, hopefully, things that surprise them.”

At the time, Tung added that fans can trust the direction the show is taking. “The one thing I've always admired about Jenny is that every season and every decision about what's coming next is purely to serve the story,” she told EW. “She's never going to do anything that doesn't make sense for the story. It's all about this beautiful world she's created and giving the fans something really, really special and giving us something really special to work with.”

Still, the viral theories are not slowing down — here’s why fans think that the Season 3 posters might reveal the show’s ending.

Fans Think Belly Might Choose Herself

Prime Video shared the first Season 3 poster in March, prompting fans to question the fate of this love triangle. The original promo poster showed Belly standing alone in front of a hydrangea bush. At the time, the photo choice prompted a viral theory that TSITP Season 3 would change the book’s ending.

Reminder: For Seasons 1 and 2 of the show, the poster featured Tung, alongside Briney (who plays Conrad Fisher) and Casalegno (who plays Jeremiah Fisher) — a reference to the series’ central love triangle. According to fans, the change-up for Season 3 could be a hint that Belly is leaving the romantic drama behind. “Calling it now belly isn’t ending up with anyone in the show based off the poster just released,” one fan guessed on TikTok. (As of publication, the video has over three million views.)

The fan theory quickly gained traction, but people had mixed thoughts on the possibility of an alternate ending. One wrote, “me if belly even thinks of saying ‘i choose me,’” alongside a video of her side-eyeing the camera and playing eerie music. Another posted a video, writing, “i will RIOT if belly chooses herself this season.” But a different fan tweeted, “this poster screams belly choosing herself in the end and I’m all here for it!”

Other Fans Think Season 3 Will Stay True To The Book’s Plot

Prime Video shared an updated poster in an April 23 Instagram post. This time, the three main cast members were all featured.

In the latest promo, Jeremiah is kissing Belly’s cheek, while she looks into the camera and Conrad watches them angrily. It’s a clear recreation of the poster for Sabrina, a 1954 film starring Audrey Hepburn as Sabrina, Humphrey Bogart as Linus, and William Holden as David. The film is also a love triangle about two brothers who fall for the same girl — and in the poster, the one who wins Sabrina’s heart in the end happens to be standing exactly where Conrad is in the S3 poster.

Fans were quick to point out the similarities — believing that this poster could be an Easter egg, confirming that Belly will end up with Conrad by the end of the series. “this the summer i turned pretty poster is literally based off of ‘sabrina’ (1954). not only did they watch it at the drive in in s1, but linus… who is on the left… is who sabrina ends the film with,” one fan wrote on X, formerly called Twitter.

What’s The Verdict?

So far, the show’s plot has stayed true to the books with some slight changes and character additions. If Season 3 continues to mimic the trilogy (and the Sabrina-inspired poster seems to hint that it will), the show will end with Belly choosing Conrad — a plotline that Team Conrad fans want to see play out, hence the upset about the possibility of Belly opting for independence over a relationship. However, the series might not make Belly choose one over the other.

In the third book, We’ll Always Have Summer, Belly does prioritize freedom for a while, studying abroad in Spain after ending her relationship with Jeremiah. It’s while she’s away, “choosing herself,” that she and Conrad reconnect... and yes, they eventually get their happily-ever-after.

TL;DR, there’s a possibility that everyone will get what they want from TSITP Season 3, whether they’re rooting for Belly to spend some time alone or for her to reunite with Conrad.
